From Notes to Referrals: How Chiropractors Can Earn Trust from PI Attorneys and Deliver Outcomes Patients Brag About

Chiropractor consulting with patient while reviewing notes and legal documentation

Most chiropractors want more personal injury (PI) cases, but few understand how to truly build trust with attorneys.

In our latest coaching session with a group of doctors, we reviewed a key conversation with two downtown attorneys—a pre-litigation attorney and a litigation specialist. Both shared what frustrates them most about working with chiropractors, and what makes them eager to refer clients to the right one.

Here’s the breakdown.

1. Document with Purpose: Why Over-Treating Destroys Credibility

One of the attorneys’ biggest complaints? Doctors who treat for 6 months without documentation or measurable outcomes.

At Pulse Point, our standard protocol is:

  • 12-visit treatment plans
  • Initial intake with disability forms (e.g., Oswestry)
  • Re-evaluation at visit 12 showing at least 30% improvement
  • If improvement is <30%, refer out, order imaging, or reassess.

“You can’t justify a second round of treatment without showing progress.”

Pro Tip: 95% of our patients finish care within 12 visits. Rarely do we need round two—and when we do, we always document.

2. Be the Fastest to Communicate (and Attorneys Will Love You)

PI attorneys are desperate for better communication. One of their biggest frustrations is waiting weeks for treatment notes or updates.

“You guys send us everything within 48 hours. That alone sets you apart.”

Here’s our system:

  • At discharge, tell patients to call their attorney immediately.
  • We send all documentation within 1-2 business days.
  • If a patient no-shows or misses multiple appointments, we inform the attorney right away.

This builds trust and increases referrals.

3. Focus on Function, Not Just Pain Relief

We teach our team to treat the whole person—from pain relief to ergonomics, lifestyle, and emotional health.

“Your patient isn’t just in pain. They’re stressed, overworked, and trying to get back to golf, parenting, or their desk job.”

In one case, a senior partner from one of the largest PI law firms in the country was unable to golf due to neck pain. Four visits later, he played four 18-hole rounds pain-free and referred his entire family.

Why?

  • We addressed his posture
  • Educated him about his stand-up desk
  • Taught ergonomic breathing and microbreaks
  • Delivered functional rehab beyond the adjustment

4. This Is Why You Joined an Integrated Practice

Most chiropractic management groups focus only on numbers:

“How many visits? How many patients per week?”

But what about outcomes? What about impact?

We remind our doctors:

  • The real ROI is patient trust and referrals
  • Treat every patient like they’re a 10-year relationship, not a 10-day transaction

“Take care of people like this, and you’ll never need marketing again.”

We’ve had patients stay with us for a decade because we teach our team to:

  • Deliver customized care
  • Educate with confidence
  • Document with precision
  • Ask for feedback and referrals

5. Let Your Team Be the Difference

From box breathing and journaling to posture coaching and mobility drills, our doctors go beyond textbook care. And it shows.

As one doc said:
“I’m going to focus on maximizing outcomes and asking for referrals.”

That’s the mindset we build through our coaching.

Final Word: Get Back to the Big Picture

When the paperwork, codes, and EMR transitions bog you down, remember:

  • You’re changing lives
  • You chose a model that integrates soft tissue, rehab, mindset, and movement
  • And you’re creating something different—and better—than most chiropractors in your city

Let that drive you.
